SUP Buddies On Tour - Norfolk

Steeped in history and surrounded by beautiful plants and wildlife the Boards are particularly stunning. Famous for its man-made Broads with 125 miles of navigational waterways Norfolk was very much on my list of places to paddle and explore.

The journey from Berkshire to Norfolk was slightly long, this wasn’t helped by the fact that I needed to stop en route in St. Albans to purchase a windsurf mast for my son. With my very patient SUP Buddies passenger in tow, we finally arrived at the Canal Camping site which was to be our base for a weekend of epic adventure and exploration.

Tucked away and nestled amongst water, the campsite is an ideal location for those looking to relax while enjoying natural adventures. We arrived quite late on Friday evening and quickly pitched tents, gazebos, and awnings, followed by toasting marsh mellows around a crackling fire pit.

Access to the water runs alongside the campsite, which is suitable for both paddle boards and kayaks, so we had the added bonus of being able to walk a short distance to launch. Meandering and drifting our way along, navigating some narrow parts with low-hanging trees, and reeds, I am not surprised that this is one of the country’s most unique and beautiful canals. Wildlife is in abundance, with butterflies, dragonflies, and birds the sights and sounds truly provide mindfulness moments. There are local wildlife walks and nature reserves for those who want to explore off the water. With mixed paddling abilities, we all complimented each other enthusiastically, pitching in to help others when needed.

The evenings were spent under clear skies around the campfire, consuming awesome barbecue food, beer, and fizz the perfect way to relax, chill and get to know my fellow Buddies.

A massive thank you to all who joined me and made this such an epic weekend. Anyone who has joined SUP Buddies will know that we are a warm, friendly, and inclusive group of paddlers and new faces are most welcome.
